Assalamu Aleykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu to the Umma University fraternity. May the peace, mercy and blessings of God the Almighty, the Sustainer of humanity be with each and every one of you. I pray and trust that you are all safe and sound wherever you may be.In this second Communique,

I am pleased to update you on the status and progression of our 2020 Academic Calendar. The January – April 2020 Trimester ended on Friday 17th April 2020. While most of the Teaching and Learning was largely completed, the final trimester Examinations are still pending. As soon as we work out the modalities for undertaking the Examinations, we will promptly pass on the information to the students.

Meanwhile, The Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, the Council and the Management are committed and determined to ensure there is continuity of Teaching and Learning at the University even as the containment measures for combating COVID-19 pandemic are extended for a further 21 days by the Government.

To this end, the University Senate has had meetings and approved the continuation of the May to August 2020 Trimester which is set to begin on 4th May 2020 promptly. Teaching and Learning will be conducted remotely during the entire May 2020 Trimester. To facilitate this, the Management has:

  1.  Activated the Learning Management System (https://elearning.umma.ac.ke) on our website. The access credentials will be availed to all Academic Staff and registered Students.
  2. Trained the Academic staff on the use of the Learning Management system platform and they are now in the process of uploading the Teaching materials
  3. Activated remote access (or off campus access) to all our University Library Resources including Text books and Journals as well as large electronic data bases externally. Again access credentials will be given to registered students.
  4. Activated Bulk SMS to enable us to pass quick information to all Staff and Students
  5. Installed a Pay Bill Number to facilitate registration and payment of fees and other levies charged.
  6. Collating the telephone numbers and official Email for all ongoing students to enable them access the Learning Management Platform and the Library resources.
  7. Negotiating with Safaricom, Airtel, JTL and Telkom to provide students with subsided data bundles.

To help you navigate through all these, Dr. Hussein Ali Osman, Registrar Academic and Student Affairs will be at hand to assist you (haosman@umma.ac.ke)

Please do note that this remote online teaching is only a short stopgap emergency measure to enable Umma University students to continue with their studies. As soon the Government lifts the restrictions to the measures to combat COVID 19 disease then we will revert back to our face to face teaching and learning in our respective campuses.keep safe, please continue to observe the containment measures put in place by the Government to combat COVID 19.

Have a blessed Ramadhan.

Message from the Vice Chancellor

UU COMMUNIQUE ONE 31ST MARCH 2020.

ASSALAMU ALEYKUM WARAHMATULLAHI WABARAKATU. MY COLLEAGUES STAFF AND STUDENTS OF UMMA UNIVERSITY, MAY THE PEACE, MERCY AND BLESSINGS OF GOD ALMIGHTY BE WITH EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

THESE ARE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES IN OUR LIVES AS THE CORONA DISEASE VIRUS (CODVID-19) SCOURGE CONTINUES TO RAVAGE THE WORLD. INDEED, AS OUR BELOVED COUNTRY KENYA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD CONTINUE TO FIND WAYS AND MEANS OF CURTAILING AND MITIGATING THIS DISEASE, WE AS A UNIVERSITY MUST ALSO PLAY OUR PART IN ENSURING THAT WE ACQUIRE SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SPREAD AND CONTROL OF COVID-19.

FIRST, WE MUST ADHERE TO ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS AND DECREES GIVEN BY THE EXPERTS AND THE GOVERNMENT IN TERMS OF PREVENTION OF THE DISEASE AND STAYING SAFE. THIS WILL INCLUDE SOCIAL DISTANCING, PRACTICING GOOD HYGIENE (HAND WASHING WITH SOAP AND WATER), AVOIDING CROWDED AND CONGESTED PLACES, CONTACT WITH SURFACES AND TOUCHING OUR MOUTH, EYES AND NOSE (MEN) AS WELL AS A HOST OF MANY OTHER MEASURES INCLUDING STAYING AT HOME AND OBEYING THE CURFEW TIMES.

SECONDLY, IT IS AT SUCH TIMES OF ADVERSITY AND DIFFICULTIES THAT THE IMAGINATION AND INNOVATION OF THE HUMAN INGENUITY WORKS AT ITS BEST. AS SUCH WE MUST TRY OUR LEVEL BEST TO EMBRACE AND ADOPT THE INEVITABLE CHANGE THAT THE COVID 19 HAS CAUSED TO OUR LIVES. WE MUST THEREFORE BE ABLE TO UNDERTAKE SOME LIMITED CONTINUITY IN OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. TO THIS END, I AM REQUESTING THE ACADEMIC MEMBERS OF STAFF WHO HAVE HAD UNITS TO TEACH IN THIS JANUARY 2020 TRIMESTER TO CONTACT THEIR RESPECTIVE STUDENTS ON THE VARIOUS ELECTRONIC AND ONLINE PLATFORMS AVAILABLE TO FINALIZE THE TWO WEEKS OR SO OF TEACHING THAT WAS REMAINING AS AT THE TIME OF CLOSURE TO SHARE YOUR TEACHING NOTES AS WELL AS GIVE ASSIGNMENTS TO THE STUDENTS. THIS WILL BE DONE IN CLOSE CONSULTATION AND WITH THE FACILITATION OF YOUR RESPECTIVE DEANS, CHAIRS OF DEPARTMENTS, ICT MANAGER AND STUDENT CLASS REPRESENTATIVES AND UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE REGISTRAR ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS. THE GOAL IS TO PREPARE THE STUDENTS FOR THE JANUARY 2020 TRIMESTER EXAMINATIONS. INSHA’ALLAH ONCE WE REOPEN WE SHOULD GO STRAIGHT INTO EXAMS.

THIRDLY, I HAVE ASKED THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN AND LIBRARY STAFF, AGAIN WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE ICT MANAGER TO AVAIL THE ELECTRONIC LIBRARY RESOURCES TO ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS OFF CAMPUS AND TO FACILITATE THE ACCESS OF THESE E-RESOURCES REMOTELY BY GIVING THE NECESSARY LOG IN CREDENTIALS AND PASSWORDS TO ALL BONA FIDE UMMA UNIVERSITY FRATERNITY.

LASTLY WE WILL INSHA’ALLAH KEEP YOU UPDATED ON OUR WEBSITE, ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA FORUMS AND ON OUR E MAILS, IF AND WHEN ANY FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS DO OCCUR. PLEASE ALSO CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE FOR OUR DAILY UPDATES ON THE GLOBAL STATUS OF COVID-19.

JAZAKALLAH KHAYR, STAY SAFE AND WE ALL PRAY TO ALLAH (SWT) TO EASE THE PAIN OF HUMANITY ARISING OUT OF THE COVID -19 PANDEMIC.
